Abstract
In July 2023, Professor Arnesh Telukdarie, a digital transformation strategist at the University of Johannesburg, alongside the Joburg Water team and his own research team, evaluated the state of the city's water infrastructure. The figures were staggering: 46.1% of the city's water was unaccounted for owing to leaks and outdated infrastructure, costing Johannesburg R3 billion in the 2022/23 fiscal year. Determined to tackle this challenge, Telukdarie and his team were eager to explore innovative solutions, knowing that effective water management was crucial for the city's sustainability. Johannesburg, one of Africa's largest metropolitan areas, faces significant challenges with its aging water infrastructure. Rapid urbanisation, population growth, and climate change exacerbate the issue, leading to severe water shortages and inefficiencies. The city's water management system is plagued by high levels of non-revenue water (NRW), including unbilled consumption and physical leaks. These inefficiencies not only strain the city's financial resources but also compromise the reliability of water supply to residents and businesses. Recognising the potential of advanced digital technologies, Professor Telukdarie proposed the implementation of satellite-based monitoring and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technologies. This digital integration would enable precise leak detection and timely maintenance efforts, significantly reducing water losses and improving operational efficiency.
