Abstract
The quest by modern technology to develop materials with a distinctive combination of properties that is difficult to be met by engineering materials, such as metal alloys and ceramics, led to the development of composites. Due to high stiffness and weight to strength ratio, synthetic fibers such as carbon fibers and E-glass have been studied as reinforcements in polymer composites. Due to high cost, attention has been diverted to natural fiber composites. Due to its low cost, ease of fabrication, low density, and low weight-to-volume ratio, wood fiber-reinforced composites have received a lot of attention. Also, awareness toward environmental issues and the rising requirement of more versatile polymer-based materials have further encouraged interest in green composites. In this chapter, we explore the treatment and usage of wood as a natural fiber reinforcement for polyester composites, with a focus on how it affects the properties of the composites.
