Abstract
Women’s rights to equality in all sectors of society, social, political and economically have been enshrined in the constitution. New legislation to address gender and racial imbalances in the labour market and the broader society has been introduced. However, ‘the struggle is not yet over since in practice, the situation for women has not changed despite changes in the law’ (Madlala, Member of Parliament in 1994, quoted in Meer 1999: 142).
