Abstract

Violation of the sanctuary of someone's house is not a new crime, and much has been written about the psychological effects thereof on the victims (Hoctor "Punishing domestic housebreaking" 2004 Obiter 190). According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) housebreaking was the most prevalent crime affecting households in 2011, increasing from 592 000 incidents in 2010 to 730 000 incidents in 2011.
