Abstract

Technological advances in computing make the use of underwater data centres (UDCs) feasible. UDCs have low operational costs with improved power usage effectiveness. However, it is important to design an energy network for providing operational electrical power for operating underwater data centres. This can be realized via the use of underwater renewable energy resources in the marine environment. However, additional research is required to design an underwater energy system suitable for enabling the functioning of UDCs. The powering of UDCs can be realized via the use of renewable energy resources in the marine environment. This can be realized by designing architecture for underwater renewable energy sources. The challenge of designing this architecture is addressed here. The discussion presents the architecture for provisioning UDCs with electrical power. The proposed architecture presents an underwater smart grid model that accesses renewable electrical energy for underwater data centres. In addition, the proposed architecture describes an underwater grid with the capability to determine locations in the sub-marine environment with the highest amount of renewable electrical energy.
