Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is referred to as a silent pandemic of present and future. Antibiotics is an essential tool in modern medicine and the problem of resistance shown by microbes to these drugs are a great threat to medical and pharmaceutical field. Nanoparticles are considered as a new line of defense against this pandemic and a plethora of research is being performed in the area of nanoparticles for anti-microbial resistance. This chapter explains the current scenario of AMR and the basic causes of this resistance. Further the chapter details nanostructures used in delivering antibiotics and also structures which can be used as antimicrobial agents themselves. The challenges in translating these nanodrugs and the future of nanoparticles in combating microbes showing resistance to drugs is being described in the later part of this chapter. The opinion and suggestions of the authors as a remedy for the problem of AMR using nanotechnology is also included in the chapter.
