Abstract

The co-location of a Disdrometer and a Spectrum Analyzer-monitored satellite TV Receive-Only (TVRO) link over a period spanning almost two rain seasons in a subtropical location (Durban, 29°52′S, 30°55′E) offers a unique look into a number of parameters of satellite TV reception for the location and other subtropical locations. Actual reception over the link in clear air as well as during precipitation is captured over several months and the patterns of individual rain-attenuation events are characterized. Of particular interest is the observed time lapse between the drop in the received signal and the observation of actual precipitation at the receiving antenna. It indicates clearly that the observed impairments in satellite TV reception, which sometimes result in total outage of reception, is not always due to the actual rainfall at the receive antenna but possibly also due to rainfall somewhere else along the propagation path.
