Abstract
This case study delves into the challenges faced by Mangaliso, a chemical engineering graduate from the University of Johannesburg, as well as the broader issues within South Africa's chemical sector. Structural unemployment is a pressing concern, which is exacerbated by a surplus of graduates lacking sector-specific qualifications. The introduction of the Skills Supply and Demand Database (SSDD) emerges as a transformative solution to this issue, providing a centralised database of sector-qualified individuals. This web-based platform facilitates seamless interactions among employers, learners, and the CHIETA, offering a range of benefits, including improved absorption rates, more employment contracts, and enhanced employability outcomes. Compliance with the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act ensures data integrity, and the platform's log reports enhance transparency in the recruitment process. Beyond its role in the chemical sector, this case study explores the broader implications of SSDD, contributing to a paradigm shift in labor demand and supply systems. By showcasing the unique features and methodologies employed, the study provides valuable insights into SSDD's role in fostering a more efficient and effective employment landscape in South Africa.
