Abstract

This case delves into the obstacles and difficulties that impede the progress of innovation, creativity, and productivity in rural areas. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 9, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The study takes a systematic approach to identify the barriers that hinder the aspirations of rural communities, including the lack of skilled workforce, financial resources, and technological infrastructure. It analyses the interrelationships of systems and subsystems within rural communities to gain insight into the complex web of rural ecosystems that influence rural development. The study also develops a comprehensive system model that not only identifies challenges but also strategically prioritises them. By employing this method, the study offers a targeted approach to rural development, highlighting areas that require immediate attention and resources. In collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) management aims to provide a quantitative analysis of rural systems and develop a system model that captures the complexities of rural communities. This model will guide a more informed, strategic, and impactful approach to addressing challenges and fostering development within rural communities.
