Abstract

This case study follows the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) as they seek to develop optimum enablement, for purposes of maximising delivery through the adoption of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies. The examples of these fourth industrial revolution technologies include robotic process automation (RPA), integration, the adoption of data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI). To achieve this goal, the CHIETA has partnered with the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), a leading institution in digital transformation, to facilitate the design of a digital system landscape. This collaboration had a one-year life span in 2023. In this case, the CHIETA faced a major challenge in the form of limited solutions for digital transformation, which the UJ-JBS team aimed to address through the design of the digital system landscape using RPA and AI. A critical review of the best global practices in architecture development, focusing on the services environment, together with an analysis of the current CHIETA systems and the development of a proposed digital strategy, was done. This teaching note provides a pedagogy on the digital system landscape using the case of the CHIETA's pursuit to implement the systems design through RPA and AI. The case study falls under the digitalisation, sustainability, and 4IR sub-fields of academia.
