Abstract

Wesselsite, SrCuSi4O10 (fig. 3), is a phyllosilicate member of the gillespite group of minerals found in, and named for, the Wessels mine, Kalahari manganese field, South Africa (Giester and Rieck 1996). Other members in the group include cuprorivaite, gillespite, and effenbergerite, the last also occurring at the Wessels mine. Wesselsite crystallizes in the tetragonal system and displays perfect cleavage parallel to {001}.
