Abstract

Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite and not an official IMA-recognized species. Zoisite occurs as colorless, gray-white, yellow, brown, pink, or green crystals, but the name tanzanite is applied only to purple-red and blue-purple crystals. Although zoisite of various colors is known from many localities worldwide, the most famous and desirable is undoubtedly the variety tanzanite, from Tanzania (fig. 1).
