Abstract
Considering factors like the confines of COVID-19, geographical distances and other geopolitical uncertainties, an alternative data collection method was necessary. Daily diaries have been a regularly used method. However, the commonplace of smartphones in our society has become intertwined with our daily lives, thus aiding the shift from paper to an electronic format. Electronic diaries provide a flexible and effective tool to collect data from participants wherever they are and when convenient for them. This grounded theory study used electronic diaries as the data collection tool within the hospitality industry. This industry presents a challenging work environment but has seen a marked increase in women’s employment. Women in many cultures are considered homemakers and caregivers but are expected to work outside the home to contribute to the household finances. The instant messaging application WhatsApp was used, and participants contributed by answering daily questions. These questions enquired about their activities and aspects of their well-being. During the two months, numerous insightful responses were collected using short answers, emojis and voice notes. These were transcribed and loaded into ATLAS.ti, coded and analysed. This methodological chapter aims to assist future researchers by sharing some challenges and highlighting pitfalls experienced. The ease of use, cost-effectiveness and advantages of this tool outweigh the disadvantages by providing a valuable alternative as a qualitative data collection tool.
