Abstract
This paper seeks to explore the multifaceted socio-economic problems associated with unemployment in South Africa, focusing on the intersection of these challenges with the global context, particularly the Russia-Ukraine conflict’s impact on tourism. The literature review was used as a research methodology for the paper. Findings from the research not only shed light on the socio-economic consequences of high unemployment but also reveal the complex interplay of global events and their influence on South Africa’s domestic affairs. While social programs are welcomed as a means of poverty reduction, our analysis suggests that they may not be adequately addressing the root causes of unemployment. Moreover, these programs inadvertently generate the unintended consequences of dependency syndrome, further exacerbating the challenge. Intriguingly, the state of unemployment is found to be gravely affecting the survival strategies of HIV/AIDS-affected households, compounding the already dire situation. Additionally, the paper uncovers a disturbing trend: the rate of social vices such as crime and violence is on the rise, with violence taking the troubling direction of xenophobia. This alarming phenomenon demands a closer examination of its causes and potential solutions. By integrating the tourism perspective, this paper underscores the interconnectedness of global conflicts and South Africa’s domestic challenges. The Russia-Ukraine conflict, in particular, has a ripple effect on South Africa’s tourism industry, contributing to the unemployment problem. As international tensions influence travel patterns and diplomatic relations, the tourism sector in South Africa faces a significant downturn. Understanding these complex dynamics is crucial for crafting comprehensive policies that address both unemployment and its ramifications, including the impact on tourism while fostering a more resilient and diversified South African economy.
