N2 - Communication with the aid of electromagnetic waves will remain the predominant mode of communication for some time to come. The aim of this chapter is thus to expand on how the full potential of electromagnetic communication can be unlocked to support extreme data rates. First, the frequency spectrum will be looked at, allowing for a closer look at the available transmission ranges for 5G and 6G. Secondly, the concept of channel capacity will be defined, allowing for the contextualization of the importance of the availability of bandwidth to be made, which is the main driving factor in the transition to higher frequencies. Thereafter, the various aspects of establishing links for millimeter-wave and terahertz communication will be discussed in detail. Finally, the methods for accessing the spectrum and its channels to their full capacity will be discussed from the communication systems engineering perspective.
