Abstract

This chapter explores concerns, limitations and mitigations arising in the relationship between myself - an intermittent researcher who enters and exits the field in short spurts - and a marginalized subject community, using reflections from two studies conducted between 2008 and 2014 among the !Xun and Khwe San communities in South Africa's Northern Cape Province. The chapter discusses ethical considerations impacting the research as well as challenges arising within an indigenous ethnographic research context. Researcher reflexivity and long-term relationships within a larger, on-going project are described as significant strategies of methodological practice that helped alleviate concerns and limitations as they arose during the fieldwork.
