Abstract
The question of South Africa's youth remains quite contentious even after eleven years of democratic rule in the country. This group still grapples with many social ills due to its marginalised status. Despite efforts by both government and civil society aimed at reversing the negative trends affecting this population, its overall living circumstances remain precarious. The present discussion revisits the plight of the youth by proffering a synoptic account of a larger study that had examined the human development situation of the youth in Johannesburg. It throws some light on the situation of young people in Johannesburg, whilst making reference to empirical evidence that was elicited via a number of research tools. It concludes by making mention of the outcomes of the previous study that were contained in a report as recommendations for intervention.
