The future of education: Writing exams in the Metaverse at South African universities

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Traditional exam writing in South Africa has long been plagued by a series of bottlenecks that hinder equitable, engaging, and cost-effective assessment practices. These bottlenecks include high printing, distribution, and invigilation costs, limited access to assessments for remote and disadvantaged students, and the inherent challenges of securing exam integrity. This chapter explores how the emerging concept of the Metaverse can address these bottlenecks and revolutionize the examination process. By presenting a proposed Metaverse-based exam process, this chapter offers a glimpse into a future where South African education can break free from the constraints of tradition and usher in a new era of assessment that is dynamic, inclusive, and immersive. However, it also acknowledges the need for further research to ensure the successful integration of the Metaverse into South African education.
