Abstract

Although Sibiya has written a handful of novels, research focusing on his novels has been scanty. This is particularly so where his inaugural novel, Kungasa Ngifile (2002), is concerned. This chapter devotes itself to the author's skills in delineating characters in this specific novel. While there are two methods of characterization, namely the direct and the indirect, the authors of this chapter are particularly interested in the indirect method of character delineation. The chapter critically considers elements such as actions, dialogue and thoughts in exposing how Sibiya handles the narrative element of characterization in the novel. Using a textual method, the chapter intends to reveal how the handling of these elements helps uplift the standard of the novel.
