Abstract

The quantification of Green ICT in the banking sector has been advanced in various research papers with significant quantifiable measures developed. The rapid quantification of these collective measures in order to achieve a comprehensive ICT assessment is a challenge. This research proposes a consolidated, accelerated assessment methodology with a current case study of deployment. There is a concern that sustainability is not given adequate and balanced attention, on a broader scale, specifically from a systems perspective. This includes the economic, social, environmental and technical pillars specific to conducting green ICT assessments. The purpose of this study is to propose an evaluation methodology of sustainable green ICT within the banking sector in South Africa. The toolset developed can be used to select the best and most cost effective transformation path for the organization. The study uses a company case study that is measured against global green ICT benchmarks to substantiate the argument. The results of the assessment provide expedient information for decision making in order to prioritize actions to optimize data centers according to global green ICT sustainability best practices that help to reduce data center cost. An illustration on the impact of green power supply is discussed.
