Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is evolving and disrupting various sectors, and the construction industry is not an exception. Although the construction industry is coming up strongly in terms of the 4IR technologies adoption, the evidence of its uptake is still weak, especially in developing countries. This is incomparable to the diffusion rate in other industries. Hence, the construction industry must be brought up to speed as industry 5.0 has started to loom. This chapter begins with a broad view of the construction industry, drawing arguments for and against it, along with some practical examples in Tables 1 and 2. Drawing on this background, we define, unpack and discuss the construction industry and fourth industrial revolution (4IR) extensively, the role of the engineering profession in Nigeria, and also in terms of the construction industry. Lastly, we provide strategies to achieve 4IR maturity in the construction industry.
