Abstract

The effect of multipass welding using 309L austenitic stainless steel (ASS) filler metal was studied. The material follows ferrite to austenite (FA) mode of solidification under equilibrium cooling conditions. However, due to rapid cooling rates associated with welding, FA transformation is incomplete, with residual ferrite present in the microstructure at room temperature. The properties of the material are dependent on the microstructure. In case of 309L, the presence of ferrite enhances the material's corrosion resistance and weld quality. In heavy duty applications, multipass welding method is normally used to weld thick gauge material. In this instance, the final microstructure is greatly affected due to thermal cycling involved in the process. Thermal cycling due to multipass welding alters the microstructure giving rise to change in mechanical properties. The change in microstructure and hardness due to thermal cycling over a range of 0.6kJ/mm-1.51kJ/mm heat input (HI) was studied. It was found that thermal cycling had no significant effect on the microhardness and microstructure. However, in some cases a slight increase in microhardness within preceding passes was noted. In all cases, microstructures of agglutinated passes were dissimilar.
