Abstract
The Campbellrand Subgroup consists essentially of dolomite and limestone. A stromatolitic carbonate facies (the Ghaap Plateau facies), situated on the north-eastern side of the Griekwastad fault zone (a synsedimentary growth fault), and a clastic-algal laminated, ferruginous carbonate facies with carbonaceous shale, banded ferruginous chert and basic tuffs (the Prieska facies) are present. The Ghaap Plateau facies is subdivided into 6 formations of various dolomites. some containing columnar stromatolites and giant domes, some cherty, some algal. The Prieska facies comprises 2 formations. In addition the Monteville and Gamohaan formations represent 2 tongues on the north-eastern side of the Griekwastad fault zone. Facies and thickness variations reach a maximum intensity along this fault zone.-from Author
