Abstract
This case study revolves around Professor Telukdarie, a distinguished professor specialising in digital transformation, Industry 4.0, and sustainable business practices at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. In January 2022, Professor Arnesh recognised a need to enhance the methods of measuring the sustainability performance of companies. He identified several inadequacies in traditional ESG reporting techniques, such as a lack of transparency, comparability, and consistency. Professor Telukdarie embarked on a journey to develop and digitalise a consolidated ESG matrix which would undergo continuous updates to address these issues. This approach provided a standardised and reliable way to measure and interpret ESG performance, which can aid investors and other stakeholders in making informed decisions. The case study emphasises the importance of incorporating digitalisation in improving sustainability reporting, as well as the importance of transparency, comparability, and consistency in ESG reporting. Hence, the case is highly relevant for students studying sustainable business practices, environmental management, digital innovation, the 4th industrial revolution, and the changing landscape of ESG reporting.
