N2 - The behaviour of 12 square concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) under concentric axial compression is investigated. The hollow steel sections are 102×102×3.0 mm, 120×120×3.5mm and 150×150×3. 5mm and are filled with Grade 30 concrete. For each section size, the lengths tested are 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0m and 2.5 m. These lengths provide a range of columns, from relatively short to slender composite columns. The slenderness ratio (L/b) range from 6.67 to 24.61 and the depth-to-wall thickness (b/t) range from as 33.87 to 42.86. The compressive resistance of the composite columns are compared with the design strengths predicted by the South African standard (SANS 10162-1), as well as the European design standard (Eurocode 4). The test results of the slender members are found to be at variance with the codes.
