Abstract

Spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) in Nd0.5Er 1.5Fe14-xMxB, where M=Al or Co and x=0-3, were determined by ac susceptibility measurements. In Nd0.5Er 1.5Fe14B, the SRT is observed at about 195 K. The addition of Al was found to shift the SRT to lower temperatures, presumably due to the weakening of the rare earth-transition metal exchange interaction. For M being Al and x=2, an additional SRT is observed at about 25 K, possibly due to a change of cone angle. Similar reductions in the SRT temperature were observed with Co substitution.
