Abstract
The impetus to manufacturing movement from Johannesburg in the period 1960‐1972 is examined. Analysis is undertaken of the employment-sizt: characteristics and the industrial structure of migrant establishmems and the study’s findings compared to those of previous investigations. Typically, the migrant firm is one undergoing a phase of expansion, employs over one hundred workers, is in the metal products or machinery trades, and effects movement through a complete relocation rather than by establishing a branch operation.
