Abstract

The MV/LV distribution transformer has a key position in future customer-oriented services for several reasons. First, LV grid is mostly non-automated and transformer-level intelligence can bring more features for LV grid management. Considering new solutions like EDGE computing or local private networks, transformer is good level for utilizing them. At the same, transformer is naturally representing the last “strong point” of the MV grid towards customers and appliances. It is also physically located close to the customer, often with a central location within a local energy community. Thus, transformer station will be a natural location for installing for instance fast charging units, larger PV panel sets or batteries serving the local energy community. This work presents first findings from European ERA-NET project STRATA - Smart Transformation for Resilience And community services Through digitAl grid layers. STRATA develops a new digital-based service concept to be introduced on distribution transformer level. The concept will be developed as a technical solution, but also considering related operations and business models as well customer interface. The concept will thus be studied through economical and regulatory aspects.
