Abstract

This chapter sets the background for the examination of the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women in Africa and the Caribbean. It provides an overview of global policies and frameworks that have been adopted on SRHR globally. It emphasizes the progress made, the challenges faced, and the role of governments and international organizations in advancing SRHR. It historicizes the trajectory of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Caribbean during the enslavement period, post-enslavement, and contemporary times as a means to contextualize the discourse on sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Caribbean. It also examines SRHR in Africa by exploring the African Union’s policies and initiatives on SRHR as well as the different regional economic communities (RECs) to highlight the persistent barriers and opportunities for achieving SRHR in Africa.
