Abstract
Purpose: The innovative transformation witnessed in higher education institutions (HEIs) through the integration of digital technologies, including social networking sites such as YouTube, Flickr, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, WeChat, Douyin, Telegram, Reddit, and WhatsApp, has significantly impacted the engagement between lecturers and students in terms of teaching and learning in recent times. Based on this premise, this study investigates the phenomenon of screen sharing in the WhatsApp application as a novel approach to teaching and learning in HEIs. Therefore, six research objectives were formulated to guide the study. Methodology: The study employed interpretive content analysis as the research method, synthesizing literature obtained from the library and information science database of EBSCOhost. Findings: Findings indicate that various platforms, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Moodle, are utilized for synchronous and asynchronous real-time interactions, content sharing, and engagement in HEIs. WhatsApp's mobile technology has emerged as a frequently leveraged tool for teaching and learning on a global scale. Originality: The study is one of the first to explore the advent of screen-sharing features in WhatsApp teaching and learning in HIEs. The impact of WhatsApp screen-sharing features on the educational landscape is significant and cannot be overlooked. The potential benefits of WhatsApp screen sharing in teaching and learning include enhancing visual learning and promoting engagement through interactivity, among others. The study recommends the acquisition of contemporary digital technologies to facilitate teaching and learning processes, given the increasing focus on virtual learning in many HEIs.
