Abstract

The construction industry is seen as the engine of growth of every nation due to its significant contribution to the socio-economic development of every country. Notwithstanding its essential role, environmental degradation due to material waste generation and subsequent dumping on landfill sites is a significant problem facing the industry. There is, therefore, the need to ensure that its activities and products are steady with well defined environmental policies and sound ecological practices since it has the potential of yielding significant cost savings. Successful management of construction and demolition waste depends mainly on stakeholder initiatives, both in private and public sectors. This study thus seeks to explore the role of stakeholders in enhancing construction waste management in Ghana. Relevant related literature was reviewed as a means of gathering data. The study findings present innovative ways by which stakeholders enhance waste management in construction projects globally. The findings can serve as a benchmark to improving waste management within the Ghanaian Construction Industry. Sound ecological practices coupled with construction cost savings can be achieved as a result of stakeholders within the Ghanaian Construction Industry adopting improved waste management practices.
