Renewable Energy in Transition: Performance Challenges and Opportunities in South Africa

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The demand for electricity and the transition to renewable energy have initiated a need to construct renewable energy plants to reduce pollution and increase the electricity supply. Renewable energy positively impacts grid stabilisation and the provision of clean energy. The South African government is issuing tax incentives to promote interest and rapid construction of renewable energy projects, but delays are a significant challenge. This research work explores factors affecting the construction of renewable energy projects. It investigates challenges and risks causing the construction delays and identifies solutions that improve their performance. A qualitative research methodology is used to examine the views of professionals with experience in the renewable energy sector, who play a vital role in providing insightful information required to understand the challenges and risks facing this industry.
