Abstract

The provision of electricity is a basic public service. Power outages compromise power dependent services such as transport, communication systems, and emergency and security services. This paper identifies the factors that contribute to the poor reliability of medium voltage distribution networks causing outages. A case study was used to analyze three years of historical power outage data of medium voltage feeders. The study presents a predictive reliability assessment strategy that can be used by managers and engineers of the specific Municipality to predict the distribution network problems of medium voltage feeders by using the probability distribution of reliability indices of each year.
