Abstract

Rb-Sr ages were determined for metamorphic rocks in the Rhenosterkoppies greenstone belt. Two quartzose (pegmatitic) metamorphic rocks yielded Rb-Sr muscovite ages of 2749 Ma and 2657 Ma. These ages almost agree with previously reported muscovite ages of metamorphic rocks, granitic plutons and pegmatites associated with shear zones. A Rb-Sr whole rock isochron age of 3187 ± 104 Ma with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70089 ± 0.00017 was obtained from five mafic metamorphic rocks (metabasalts). This age probably represents the protolith age of the mafic rocks and is considerably younger than the ages of mafic rocks (3450-3550 Ma) in the well studied Barbarton greenstone belt and the Pietersburg greenstone belt. -from Authors
