Properties of titanium alloy manufactured by laser metal deposition process

Abstract

Laser Metal deposition (LMD) process, an additive manufacturing technology, has in recent time gained a lot of attention from the research community because of its ability to produce metallic part directly from its three dimensional (3D) computer aided design (CAD) model just by adding materials layer after layer. Also, LMD is a useful manufacturing process for repair of valuable parts that were not repairable or prohibitive to repair in the past. The capability of LMD for the production of parts that are made up of functionally graded material due to its flexibility in handling more than one material simultaneously also makes the process to be more attractive. The LMD process provide an alternative manufacturing method for processing difficult to machine materials such as titanium and its alloys. Ti6Al4V is an important aerospace alloy and also very useful in industries such as medical and petrochemical industries because of their excellent properties. Some of the properties produced by laser metal deposited titanium alloy are presented in this chapter. These properties include: physical, metallurgical and mechanical properties. All these properties are important in the processing of aerospace parts as well as other parts produced using the LMD process and for other future applications. This chapter presents some of these properties produced through research of laser metal deposition of Ti6Al4V. The effects of some laser processing parameters on the resulting properties of this titanium alloys are also discussed.
