Abstract
Place-based development is increasingly acquiring keen interest across emerging and developing nations as a response to slow growth and uneven development. This chapter explores the progress, synergies and contribution of Local Economic Development Agencies (LEDAs) and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in nurturing South Africa’s place-based industrial development and in addressing the country’s social, economic and spatial inequalities. Two distinct potential phases of place-based development are revealed; through LEDAs accelerating development and building institutional readiness for industrial development in less-developed regions, while the second phase is accelerating industrial development by aligning SEZs with the country’s spatial transformation and economic development targets.
