Abstract

An overview of planning, organising and evaluating of chemistry, mathematics and physics teacher education in Finland is given. Firstly, the outlines for teacher education are described such as national guidelines as well as the main organising theme of research-based teacher education, pedagogically thinking teacher. Secondly, structure and goals of the subject and primary school teacher education master's level programmes at the University of Helsinki are given and compared. There is a description of class teacher education programme, especially from the viewpoint of mathematics and science education. Besides that, subject teacher education programme is discussed including both outlines for major studies in mathematics and science and description of educational studies for future teachers. Challenges for developing and evaluating the subject teacher programme are also represented. Lastly, teacher education is reflected and discussed in the framework of research and national strategies.
