Abstract

Energy is more of a necessity than of luxury in the 20th century. Indications from increasing global population, increasing quest for education and increasing plug load devices, enlarging research scopes, it is envisaged that demand on electricity consumption in higher institutions of learning will increase in future. Higher educational institutions are therefore expected to prepare for the demand upsurge without increasing their carbon footprint. Hence, the use of clean energy sources through embedded generation is a viable means of achieving this. This article provides a mini-review of four renewable energy sources abundant in a university environment. The future campuses are energy-rich campuses that take advantage of every means of power generation in an environmentally friendly manner.
