Political Implications of Digitalised Electoral Systems in Africa

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Over the past decades, Africa has witnessed a steady progression towards democratic governance, marked by the emergence of multi-party systems, peaceful transfers of power, and the expansion of political freedoms. The African electoral process is crucial for promoting democracy and ensuring leader accountability. In recent years, countries like Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa have conducted transparent and peaceful elections, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic rights and influence their governments' direction. A total of 10 articles were used in this paper. Data extraction from ten publications was conducted using the content analysis technique. The content analysis methodologies and data extraction offered a strict criterion that was followed to perform and complete the study. The results show that embracing the adoption of digital solutions in electoral processes offers an opportunity to address electoral fraud and transform the election processes, ensuring they are free, fair, and credible. Advancements in biometric voter registration and electronic voting systems are essential in combating electoral fraud and enhancing the openness and efficiency of electoral processes. The paper concludes that governments should improve the accuracy of voter registration, deduplication and verification procedures to reduce duplicate registrations and unauthorised voters. Surveillance systems should be installed at polling stations to oversee operations, detect vote rigging, and ensure compliance with electoral rules. The paper recommends integrating blockchain technology with AI algorithms to ensure rigging-free voting systems. Algorithms should be employed to verify election results across different polling stations to guarantee consistency and accuracy. Lastly, governments should invest in training programmes for IT professionals on maintaining and securing the technology infrastructure and election officials responsible for voter registration, ballot counting, and result transmission to foster expertise in electronic voting systems.
