Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of the circular economy – that is, its definition and the approaches used to implement it. The concept of sustainability is introduced and its relation to the circular economy. The sub-Saharan African (SSA) context with regards to sustainability and waste management practices is presented and tied to the socioeconomic conditions in the region. The waste composition, generation, and recycling rates in SSA are presented together with opportunities for transitioning from a linear to a circular economy.
