Abstract

In recent times, attention has been drawn to the dilemma due to the contamination of aquatic medium by heavy metals like chromium. Compared to other forms of chromium, hexavalent chromium is considered a highly poisonous contaminant. The effluent discharge from industries like mining, photography, printing, coloring, tanneries, materials, and medicinal industries resulted in the addition of chromium into the oceanic medium. Due to the inappropriate choice of technologies from a technical, economical, and environmental viewpoint, chromium removal is a challenge from industrial water/wastewater. This chapter summarizes various removal technologies developed to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The chapter also focuses on the sources, toxicity, and chemistry of Cr(VI). In general, the existing research is not adequate to solve this problem. Therefore we also proposed future research directions for chromium complex removal.
