Abstract
The biosynthesis of cyclopiazonic acid (I) was studied in Penicillium cyclopium Westling by radiolabelling experiments. Evidence is presented that cyclopiazonic acid is derived from tryptophan, a C5-unit formed from mevalonic acid and two molecules of acetic acid. Bissecodehydrocyclopiazonic acid (X) is a direct precursor of cyclopiazonic acid.
