Abstract

The neutron scattering spectrum of YbPtGa exhibits three well-defined crystal field excitations, while that of YbCuGa shows a broad inelastic excitation centred at 17.7 meV. Two broad and weak crystal field excitations are observed in YbPdGa. The resistivity of YbPtGa shows anomalies associated with the Kondo effect, while ρ(T) for YbCuGa and YbPdGa suggests a Fermi-liquid ground state. The negative magnetoresistance of YbPtGa at low temperature was analysed in terms of the single ion Kondo effect, yielding a low value of the Kondo temperature, TK = 0.4 K.
