Abstract
Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering as well as μ SR experiments were carried out at ISIS well above and below the ordering temperature of Pr0.73 Fe4 Sb12. Our μ SR study does not reveal a clear sign of long range magnetic ordering. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals the magnetic triplet Γ4(2) to be the ground state of the system, followed by the singlet Γ1, about 25 K above Γ4(2). The non-vanishing intensity of Γ1 can only be explained if a more realistic and correct model of the crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian for filled skutterudites is used, instead of that for simple cubic symmetries.
