Abstract

This chapter mainly concentrates on natural polymer-based adhesives namely natural rubber (NR), poly(lactic acid) and chitosan which are important renewable biomaterials for various adhesive bonding applications. Even though these polymers are abundant natural renewable materials, their application as an adhesive is limited to certain areas only. In this chapter, an attempt was made to review the research works carried out in the area of these natural polymer-based adhesives. In the area of natural rubber-based adhesives, both natural rubber latex and natural rubber solution adhesives are reviewed. The adhesives made from modified forms of natural rubber such as epoxidized natural rubber, liquid natural rubber, grafted natural rubber, etc., are also reviewed in this chapter. This chapter also presents the status of poly (lactic acid)-based and chitosan-based adhesives.
