Abstract
Recent nanoindentation developments has enabled investigations of material under dynamic conditions which offers direct measure of hardness, modulus of elasticity and contact stiffness among other properties. In this study, mechanical properties of sintered Ti-6Al-4V powder based composite were reinforced with different volume fraction (1-4 vol.%) TiN nanoceramic powder, with the aim to produce strengthened titanium base composite investigated by ultra nanoindenter (UNHT). It is evident that reinforcement controls the grain morphology of the microstructure which improves the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V. Nanoindentation results showed that both hardness and modulus of elasticity depends on the volume fraction of reinforcement, TiN reinforced Ti-6Al-4V had higher hardness and modulus of elasticity as compared with that of the base alloy.
