Abstract
This article outlines the history of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (Women, Peace and Security) and highlights the substantial role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the adoption of this resolution. The UNSCR 1325 national action plans are discussed briefly, points are made about the potential importance of the plans and selected 1325 activity in Latin America is noted. Strategies to encourage the development of national plans are mentioned as part of the concluding comments.
