Abstract
During 1988 the South African goverment proposed a scheme for the registration of news agencies and journalists. Although public pressure and opposition from the Press resulted in the Government withdrawing its demand that all news agencies register by end of June, the history of calls for registration goes back to 1950. This paper offers a chronological overview of government controls on the Press and journalists from a critical perspective.
