Modelling HIV infection with specific anti-HIV immune response

Abstract

One strain models were used in this chapter for in-host modelling of HIV infec-tion with specific immune response. Cell-free and cell-to-cell infection mechanismswere accounted for. Constant viral production and density dependant viral productionmechanisms were compared for cell-free infection while the effects of treatment wereincorporated in the cell-to-cell infection mechanism. Mathematical techniques wereused to analyze the stability of the models in terms of basic reproduction numbers. Itwas established that the density dependant viral production predicted more devastatingeffects of HIV infection even with a slight difference in basic reproduction numbersthan the constant viral production. Early timing of treatment was shown to have betterbenefits on reducing the impact of HIV infection even with the use of weak drugs.
