Mitigating Congestion Problem of DPS Using Generator Sensitivity Factors and MPSOGWO

Abstract

Restricted transfer of the required bulk electricity in the current deregulated power system (DPS) is a challenging problem due to the thermal constraints of the transmission lines. The DPS has forced the electrical environment to be more competitive and demanding and hence, most of the equipments are operating at their maximum limit. In this paper, a novel method to mitigate congestion through generator rescheduling (a non-technical method) is presented. The cost of the rescheduling (congestion cost) is reduced here together with the minimization of the amount of active power rescheduled. The generator participating in the rescheduling process is selected using the generator sensitivity factor (GSF). The amount of active power to be rescheduled is obtained by implementing a modified hybrid of two well-known optimization algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO). The active power is rescheduled taking care of the minimization of congestion cost (CC). The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE 30-bus system. The application outcomes are compared with results obtained by PSO and GWO. The results confirm the outperformance of the proposed MPSOGWO approach over the parent algorithms in mitigating the congestion of DPS.
